RE: Series 10 - Episode 2 Discussion
I thought that Juliet was married when she had the affair with Harry. But does she still work for the British intelligence service and if so, is she very senior? It can't be Juliet after she masterminded Yalta. Who else could it be? It must be a red herring or a lie.

Yeah, she was married when she had the affair with Harry but I *think* she talks about being split up somewhere in S4? I also don't think Tariq would recognize Juliet on sight. He has absolutely no frame of reference for her. She was long gone two years before he began the job.

It was just that line of Harry's that almost seemed as if the writers were trying to tell us something. Of course, they may only be trying to divert our attention. I suppose they could parachute a new character in later? I guess I am just going to go with Harry on this one and put it in the tickler file.

Who was bugging Tariq's flat? Was the assassin British or Russian or American? In the moment, I assumed Russian, but maybe not. Tariq had been watched for a while because that assassin found him very quickly after Tariq discovers what he discovers. Almost as if they were on standing orders to kill him if he discovers who was handling the computer.

Could it be Zoe who is suddenly very senior in the British intelligence community? Could she have gone on working for MI-5 or MI-6 in Chili? It still does not make sense, because Harry would know about her. This high-ranking woman must be unknown to the viewers, but it seems that Harry knows who it is. I am stumped.

It does not seem a traditional British way of killing opponents. Perhaps if they are British, they want to fool Harry so that he believes that the Russians are behind poor Tariq's death.

Perhaps it could be Tessa? She had lots of dodgy but good contacts and she could easily be involved...just a thought...

I'm going for the British bugging Tariq's flat. It must have been in place for a while surely? Also, if it was Elena, why did she let herself be filmed on CCTV? She has been so careful before now. I think the poison umbrella reference was a red herring to make us think the Russians poisoned Tariq.

As for the Elliott comment, Im not reading much into that. I think it was just twisting the US Halliburton story into fiction. Harry was also talking in the present tense, ie the woman still works for the intelligence services I thought?

I still have only watched the episode once so my thoughts may change when I am back home. Smile

Whilst watching the episode I didn't get the impression that the Elliott storyline and the senior person in British Intelligence involved in dodgy deals in Iraq was necessarily going to play any further part in this season. I thought it was just part of the threat of the week.

But who knows? I may be totally off-base. Perhaps that person is also in dodgy dealings with the Russian mafia, of which I still suspect Gavrik to be a part. How did he get so rich?

Good point TL re: Halliburton. Didn't think of that. Maybe threat of the week only. Maybe Harry is just mentoring Erin by asking her what she made of it and to file it away for later?

Hmmm...Russian Mafia. They have reared their heads before. Harry mentions how Gavrik got rich - taking advantage of a situation in not so very decent ways. The dark side of revolution, democracy and capitalism. Perhaps that is a clue into Harry's obvious distaste for Gavrik in general? Not that Harry is against those ideas, just the misuse of them.

Other things that jumped out at me upon re-watch.

When Ruth told Harry that she can deal with being "dependable Ruth" as long as she was in his confidence, did anyone else finish her thought a la Harry to Blake at the end of 6.9? As in, "Or I will give you cause to see what kind of dogged brilliant bitch I can be!" Big Grin

I had the passing thought that showing Erin burning Martha Forde was a way to get into Elena's mind when Harry burnt her? Elena must have felt somewhat like Martha Forde felt? Martha Forde at least had the chance to run and hide, Elena had to live amongst those she betrayed for 30 years!

Talking about Elena's betrayal, I wonder how Elena is going to justify it
Series 10 Spoiler: show
to Ruth. I would not be surprised if she said that she was a pacifist and was against communism. If she suggested that she did it out of love, I hope that Ruth does not believe her. I don't. I still think that Elena is devious. But I am biased.

I know Harry's used the term "burned" when talking about Elena but I got the distinct impression it was the other way round. Didn't Harry say he had organised their defection but it didn't proceed? I think it was Elena that ditched Harry. Harry got his mate Jim to also burn her as a CIA asset so Elena would never be needed again to go spying.

And as for Ruth... AC, you make me laugh. Big Grin Every time Harry looks up and sees Ruth heading for him, I wonder whether he's thinking "here's the Spaniel" Smile

RE: Series 10 - Episode 2 Discussion
Watching this episode for a 2nd time I noticed from Gavrik's response as Martha hurried from the building that he appeared to already know she was a spy because he said it before being told and that would indicate to me he was a part of the wikileaks style internet site that was outing MI5 spies. I wonder if Gavrik somehow found out about Elena spying on him and forced her to pretend to Harry she has been sending information to an impersonator, after all when he and Harry first met up at the start of the series he said something along the lines of "Harry Pearce, I've thought of you every day for the past 30 years". That would also explain why it might be Elena collecting the briefcase, possibly on her husband's orders. The tragedy, Greek or otherwise, will be that Sasha is caught in the middle.

We still don't know who the girl was that phoned to confirm last week's assassin had been shot and who she was talking to, or do we? I'm guessing someone in MI6 is implicated because they'd have the technology required to hack phones and computers. If the information Martha retrieved from Gavrik's computer implicates him in the Iraq dirty deals we may discover who else is involved, not that I often correctly guess where Spooks is taking me!

I agree with you, that was a parallel scenario to show just how terrifying it was for Martha to be cut loose to fend for herself after years of promises and Harry yet again making such a call may see it for himself and regret it before the series finishes.
