RE: Episode 1 Discussion - JHyde - 05-11-2009 10:46 AM

I seriously need to go back to study. I'm bored out of my mind and am consequently obsessing far too much over my favourite TV shows. I just have a lot in common with these two characters and love them so much.

And I never bought into that idea that Ruth's family was one of her parents or something. We know from 4.10 that Ruth left home after school and pretty much never looked back.

And regardless of how wrecked everyone is over last night, I notice everyone's happy George is dead!

Did anyone else think that there was a difference between the spoiler photos and the footage shown?

Re Tea Lady's question on NW: Yes I did, she was fantastic. From my previous post it must seem as though I don't like Ruth much, but I actually do. I love the character, and therefore I hope they don't change her too much. A great part of her charm was her awkwardness and clumsiness, so I hope some of that remains.

I'm honest enough to realise that my criticism of her actions is entirely based on my all-consuming empathy with Harry, and my wanting to see him have some happiness before the show ends. The poor guy, to have to sit there and know you're probably not going to live through this, and then to have your long-lost love returned, but with husband and kid in tow. And then you have to withstand her pleading for the lives of her family, and you know there's no way you can save them. Harry was right that the bad guys would probably have killed them all as soon as they had the information, including husband and kid. I'm also very hapy that at least the kid is not Ruth's. I had feared that she would pitch up with a husband with whom she actually had a child, that would have been horrible. Ruth must only procreate with Harry - it is the law! Or should be...

It's OK. We know you like Ruth. But we also know how much you love Harry. Me too. I want Harry to have a little love, and I honestly think he's a better person for having someone to care about. But the issue of Harry sacrificing everything for his job (as he so freely expresses in 7.7 and makes me cry) is one that doesn't just go away. The job will always come first for him.

(still sobbing quietly...)

RE: Episode 1 Discussion - Tea Lady - 05-11-2009 11:22 AM

Yes they would have killed Ruth's family no matter what but if Harry had told the Indian first off where the uranium was then Ruth would have remained safe and happy with her family in Cyprus none the wiser. You would hold that against Harry, you couldnt help it. I do agree that Ruth still loves Harry. The way she looked at him said that, but she needs to find forgiveness and that will take time. Ruth needs Harry just as much as he needs her. He is the only one that ever got Ruth with all her funny ways and she knows that.

Every time I start talking about Ruth and Harry and Malcolm I just start bawling....honestly though - I have faith that the writers will keep us happy. There's a whole bloody room devoted to postcards from us for chrissakes!

Dammit why did i read the first page of this thread. lol

RE: Episode 1 Discussion - Silktie - 05-11-2009 11:45 AM

That's true, but if they plan to delay it until the very last episode ever of Spooks, what if the show gets cancelled before they can do it? I still think, though
Spoiler: show
from comments made by some of the actors in interviews that there is some development this season - probably not anything overt like kissing but perhaps an increasing amount of understanding, support and companionship between them.

Forgot to reply on the torture question earlier. I thought the blood on Harry's shirt was from when they made him lie in the other guy's blood for the fake video. So I really don't think there was any physical torture involved. Perhaps if he had been a little banged up and bloody Ruth would have been more sympathetic...Tongue

I also loved everyone's reactions when they watched the fake video the first time, great acting all round.

RE: Episode 1 Discussion - Eiger - 05-11-2009 12:05 PM

I thought it was a bit slow to start but then really warmed up. Ruth looked so healthy and happy in Greece it was such a shame that she had to be taken away from an idyllic life - regardless of whether she loved her husband as much as she did Harry in the past I think she was truly happy there.
As for Malcolm, I was so relieved they didn't kill him off but I doubt that was the last we'll see of him.
I think he will offer Ruth a place to stay with Nico (taking over from Wes as the resident kid) and will still be involved in one way or another - just hope he survives the series Cool

It's looking great though and I think it'll be just as good as series 7. Big Grin

Thanks for posting the link where we can see Series 8 Episode 1.

I'm thrilled because it worked for me here in Australia.

A few comments: Malcolm's exit was a shock for me: but as people have pointed out, not the way in which he quietly decides to retire. Malcolm was obviously so pleased to see Ruth again, not under the best of circumstances, of course. It will be interesting to see the new "techy" character evolves: Malcolm will be a hard act to follow.

Nicola Walker was brilliant: nothing more to say on that.

Ros's outburst at Malcolm was clearly over the top, and so typical of her: even though I hated the way she spoke to Malcolm. Just goes to show what an accomplished actor Hermoine Norris is. My heart was bleeding when she sopke to Malcolm in that way.
