I was watching an episode of series 7 last night and realised the pods are gone! that's not good! did anyone else notice? or was it so obvious that I, being me, was the only one to miss it?

They can't be GONE! How will they sweep for bugs etc...

Perhaps they will re-install for 8? Found them quite "star trek" like and expected to see them get beamed up at any moment!

Maybe they switched out the pods for a traditional air lock. Those maintenance plans on equipment can be expensive.
