Hey man! We have quite a few Melbournians, and Fidget is from Sydney (as am I) but are yet to meet anyone from up north.
And yes, feel free to join the fan ficcers. I have been using fan fic as a means of getting feedback on my writing and finding it helpful so I'd recommend it even just as a way of keeping your writing muscles limbre.
