RE: [spoilers] Harry and Ruth
Thanks for that guys. I will make a note of these. There seems to be so many on there with different ratings that I wasnt sure which ones to go for. I have to say I dont mind a bit of fanfic when the hubbies away and I get myself a little vodka and cranberry with a box of tissues standing by.

RE: [spoilers] Harry and Ruth
Sounds like a fun evening There are quite a lot of good ones on there, and there are quite a few people on there who are seriously good at writing. I generally ignore the ratings, unless it says M, I don't know if people on there actually pay serious thought to whether their story should be a K or a K+ for example (I'm afraid I'm one of those people who finds it impossible to rate their own stories.)
DANNY - Placements all over the shop. Back up vehicles, chopper support if we need it. Bomb disposal with a signal jammer for Mary’s trademark remote control blasts. And Tom here’s doing the catering. Mate. You are so covered. |

RE: [spoilers] Harry and Ruth
OK, we *are* starting to drift a little here so I'll reluctantly pull us back onto topic. (You know how much I love HR fan fic.) There are some really lovely HR fics that are wonderfully well written, M rated and otherwise.
We need something to tide us over until they actually get them together on the show! Many thanks to Tyger for a terrific signature |

RE: [spoilers] Harry and Ruth
And a couple of the stories have some pretty good ideas for how to get them together!
"What is the truth?" "Betrayal is a cancer. Let it eat your soul, not mine." "Please tell me this isn't going where I think it's going." |

TLC is a favourite of mine. I can also recommend Bagdad as a good read. Thouroughly enjoyable.

I absolutely love TLC
Am jumping into this conversation slightly, but I absolutely believe they belong together. No questions about it. |

RE: [spoilers] Harry and Ruth
In order to kick off this thread again, I will transcribe a small chat JHyde and I have had a few minutes ago, discussing her last fan fic Epoque:
Quote:Beatriz (B): it's the perfect ending for them What do you feel about it? "Our doubts are traitors, and make us lose the good we oft might win, by fearing to attempt" Pactum serva |

RE: [spoilers] Harry and Ruth
Sorry there's so much rubbish in there about the fan fic, but it was what started the conversation because of what Ruth Evershed on twitter said.
And forgive any errors in punctuation, it was an IM chat. I guess what we're asking is: did Ruth love George? And how does that effect her feelings for Harry? Many thanks to Tyger for a terrific signature |

RE: [spoilers] Harry and Ruth
I think that if she did love George, it was always with reservations of some form. Initially I would have said that was simply that she was adjusting to having lost Harry and having given up everything and gone on the run, and struggling to accept that she would never see him again, then I think she would have just felt guilty at even the thought of another man, because she feels she is betraying Harry in some way (even though he is techincally lost to her).
Since we didn't really find out enough about her and George in the series, I'm going to make a few assumptions. I reckon that initially hers and George's relationship was purely just friendship, something that she would be evidently lacking in now in exile, and something that she would welcome. She trusts him, and he is kind, but he is still not Harry. Their mutual friendship and respect does slowly blossom into something more - I would say that perhaps she can be wholly at ease with him (and also with Nico) and it offers her a sense of comfort and security that she has been missing for a while. I think that she did love George, and she loved who she was able to be when she was with him (ouch, that sounds so clichéd...) but there was always some trepidation about the fact that he did not know the truth of her past. And she couldn't tell him that, because to do so would bring back its ghosts, and she wouldn't be able to go through that again. So it was just buried out of sight, but still there - hence she could not marry George. (Also, in making their relationship official, she'd be completely letting go of Harry, something I don't think she could bring herself to do.) Then when George is killed, naturally she feels responsible (even if she does also blame Harry) for his death. She feels guilty that she never told him the truth, and guilty that she had moved on, as it were, from Harry (even though her only other real alternative was to sit and mope for the rest of her life, alone) and it is these two conflicting emotions, and the fact that she now feels she is betraying George by still loving Harry (because yes, she really reaally does), that through her feelings for Harry into such turmoil. Crikey, that was an essay and a half! |

RE: [spoilers] Harry and Ruth
Yes. Ruth loved George, but not enough to marry him, I think. Love is not a mutually exclusive or an either/or emotion, to my mind. Love is expansive and loving more than one person is certainly not an impossibility, especially if love object #1 is not, or no longer, available. I think Ruth needed a loving, caring relationship after she had been forced to leave her old life, and George and Nico offered her that. She had to find a way to move forward and she meshed into their lives well -- they offered a supportive and very safe environment for her. But did she love George in the same all-encompassing, idealized way she loved Harry? I don't believe so.
What would have happened if George had lived and she had to choose between him and Harry? Very difficult question! I want to believe that she would have returned to England and her old life anyway. At that point, the guilt over George's death would not have been been part of the equation and she would have had to seriously consider what it was she really wanted her life to be. I really believe that life would have included Harry. "What is the truth?" "Betrayal is a cancer. Let it eat your soul, not mine." "Please tell me this isn't going where I think it's going." |
