now THAT is not ultimate betrayal, that's sacrilege
(although, white open-collared shirt.. not quite up there with Lucas' tight blue t's but has a certain appeal |

RE: Storylines for series 9
Hello All: I am brand spankin new here...and am going to take a huge leap...so don't all growl at me at once. I haven't read back through all the posts for this thread, so forgive me if I'm repeating. I wanted to propose something that I've been kicking around in my head since 8.8. Sarah is in the hospital and just about to have a nice, neat hole blown into her forehead and Lucas asks her, "Who tasked you to kill me," and she says "Harry Pearce...you have a Nightingale mole in your midst." Lucas gets mad and we're meant to think it's just Sarah messing with him, being cruel, being sarcastic...whatever. But it's a weird moment because she never laughs, never changes her tone and just plows forward trying to convince Lucas that he should run away with her. Strange opening ploy if you're trying to get someone you love to believe what you're saying, no? Second thing that doesn't sit well with me...the conversation with Ruth on the roof. In my opinion, it's a strange scene as well...not terribly well-written and kind of awkward. But what if it's brilliantly written and the awkwardness comes from Harry feeling intensely horrible about what's happening...and it's because he's somehow involved and is feeling powerless to stop it, even though he knows that it's horrible? He never really condemns Nightingale in the conversation, he just lets Ruth condemn them...and what's with the tears? Really? Harry's crying just because something bad is looming on the horizon? This seems distinctly un-Harrylike. So this is my thinking...Harry got involved with Nightingale at it's inception...perhaps as a counter-balance to Mace...or perhaps because he saw it as a way to clear Ruth...or perhaps it was presented as a way to control the crazy, right wing, anti-human rights, pro-torture faction...or to control out of control rogue nations. Who knows? But now it's spiraled out of control and he's feeling caught...and is upset and feeling guilty...and lovely, trusting Ruth interprets his upset/guilt as a love for humanity. So...is it possible that this could be the "ultimate betrayal"? Because really, what would be worse than Harry turning out to be the bad guy? And those damn Spooks writers would be just perverse enough to do something this awful...it's the next step up from killing off your characters...destroying the credibility of the most beloved one of all. So again, don't send flaming arrows my way...it's not what I HOPE will happen. It's just a thought...and a particularly awful one at that...but one that I can't get out of my head.

RE: Storylines for series 9
Good grief Beddah, you must have been chewing over that one for a while. I totally agree that the hospital scene was a bit strange but I put that down to the poor acting of Sarah more than anything. The H/R roof scene is very weird and I dont think anyone really understood why Harry was crying but again I think I put that down to some poor H/R writing, perhaps a bit rushed, to keep us H/R fans happy until series 9.
My main sticking point with your analysis is believing that Harry could/would do such a thing. He has been so loyal to his country over the last 30 years, I just find it difficult to believe that he would sell out so easily especially as he wouldnt join Juliet and Yalta. I guess my other sticking point is that I cant see the Nightingale storyline being continued past 9.1. If Harry is the betrayer, I am sure the storyline wouldnt be wrapped up in just one episode. I do like your thought process Beddah though. Come and introduce yourself on the newbie thread. |

No worries beddah - we wouldn't yell at you, in any case!
I think you also win longest first post ever and that's saying something. Hope you join in on other threads. Many thanks to Tyger for a terrific signature |

RE: Storylines for series 9
Beddah, welcome! Those were things I wondered about as well. The Harry and Ruth scene was the most confusing for me. Whereas with Sarah I just took it as a bad attempt at trying to throw off Lucas. Or bad acting as Tea Lady said! haha! But maybe you have something! Hopefully in the end Harry isn't the culprit.

RE: Storylines for series 9
I don't buy the "Harry as a traitor theory" as, if for no other reason, it would be the end of spooks. How could they carry on without Harry at the helm?
"What is the truth?" "Betrayal is a cancer. Let it eat your soul, not mine." "Please tell me this isn't going where I think it's going." |

RE: Storylines for series 9
I'm just hoping that the "ultimate betrayal" is professional rather than personal and doesn't involve Lucas running off with Ruth A true blow to all R/H and RA fans!

RE: Storylines for series 9
I agree with Tea Lady about the H/R balcony scene. It was badly written, out of context with what had just gone before (unless Harry was crying about Sarah being shot!!) and probably slotted in as an after-thought because the producers realised they hadn't included enough H/R moments to move their relationship on as the series finished. It could be a good indication that a lot more is to happen between them in Series 9 and a bridge was being built to create a smoother transition. As for Sarah's assassination, that was, in my opinion, just a poorly written ridiculous cliche. Someone ran out of ideas. There again Beddah, you could be absolutely correct as it would be a brilliant twist if Harry turned and if it happens, I'd take my hat off to you ~ if I had one!
