At las I could watch the episode with subtitles! I have to admit the first time I watch it, at half the way of the episode I wasn't sure about this ending, and now I like it more and more. I think I should rewatch Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes again so as to see it from a different point of view fully understand it. There will be unresolved questions, though, but that is a good thing in my opinion.

Gene's character breaks my heart, poor guy, his "job" sucks! so lonely!

Maybe Gene did something really bad and that's why he's condemned to doing what he does. This is his own personal means of redemption.

Long time between posts on this thread but I wanted to update Australian fans of this show.

I just started hassling the ABC about when they're planning to air season 3 and they sent back the standard response about having 'recently' acquired the rights but with no immediate plans for scheduling. My guess would be that they'll air seasons 1 and 2 on ABC2 in the current timeslot on Friday nights that has Life on Mars. I'm betting March for the new season to be shown.

So it could just be me whistling in the wind on this thread but anyway - I just finished a re-watch of A2A and the final season, especially the finale, is every bit as heartbreaking as I remember, maybe even more so knowing what was coming.

I understand why some people were disappointed in how Gene changed between shows but I think, for all his faults, Gene was a good person. And I think good people have the capacity to learn and evolve and he did. It wasn't like he changed overnight. He learned from Sam and then from Alex and there was a big gap of time between the two. The choices made by the writers to make his back story and death in real time such a flip from what he was for 5 seasons was also genius.

My only fault with the finale is that I don't completely buy why Alex is trusting Keats at the start of the episode. It doesn't quite ring true. But apart from that it's a fantastic piece of work and a very satisfying ending.

I thought the writers did such a good job with the storytelling on this show, and by the time the finale came around, it really did feel as though this was the story they had been telling all along. I agree that it was kind of a shame to have to exchange anti-hero Gene for hero-Gene in order to get to the (as you say, heartbreaking) payoff, but it felt like a legitimate trade in the context of the conclusion. Possibly, Alex put up less resistance to the idea of him as a hero - since she already had knowledge of him as a fantasy figure from Sam's account - and this explains the tonal difference. Equally, as you point out, Gene's ability to learn, and to take the best suggestions at face value, must have contributed to this also.

I appreciated no end the care and attention that went into the gender-identity aspects both of Alex's acceptance of Gene's world (Wonderland, Narnia) and of Gene's interpretation of his position (white hat Westerns). I liked the clever layering of pre-existent dialogue and themes (Chris correcting Alex when she accuses him of being nervous, pointing out that actually he is cautious. And now we know why). All in all: a good job, well done Smile
