I think the use of the past tense is for two reasons. And Peter Firth and Richard Armitage have been doing the same thing. The first is obviously to keep speculation alive in places like this and people watching which leads to the second reason. They don't know if there's a Season 9 yet, and some of that decision is based on audience figures. I think it's just modesty prevailing in not making the assumption they'll be back for more.
