RE: Series 9 Episode 2 discussion
The point of view stuff was so Kurosawa, loved it.
Love the Beth character, love that she is not emaciated. I'm somewhat placated since Ros is now gone. She fills the gap. Sophia Myles is so Kate Winslet, I use to think she was Kate in the first couple of times I saw her in other projects. I would have the next episode open with Harry and Ruth waking up together, nothing too cute mind you. We can then move from the longing (which is wearing a bit thin) to them trying to keep the secret from the rest of the team, spending a few moments together over tea and variations thereof. Peter Firth and Nicola Walker can play it straight (the straighter the better) while the team looks on slackjawed and we laugh ourselves silly. Iain Glen looks wonderful with some flesh on him. He was so thin for Wives and Daughters that it took away from the handsome. Tariq is prettier than ever. Don't know who the new guy is yet but he did a great job. I thought it was very cool that Lucas was able to instantly memorize all those numbers on the security cameras and his exit scene with the cams being turned back on as he passed was lovely. As many have mentioned the "white guy, long coat, briefcase" description over Harry walking out (after the great transfer scene inside) was chilling. I'm guessing most of us can deal with just about any of them being taken out except Harry. Face it, Lucas and Beth are an accident waiting to happen. Maya, why? Whyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy? And Yeah Simon Russell Beale! Rooftop scene: Beth and Dmitri sneak up and disarm Lucas, cuff him and lead him away. Lucas screams, "No Harry please, I'd rather die!" Harry: "We're sending you to rehab ................. in Texas." |

RE: Series 9 Episode 2 discussion
Just back from my holidays
Priorty on return watch spooks. I am in the camp that liked this one. The bad guy is a British citizen which is good I'm sure that there are some really shady people in powerful positions. Also i get tired of people from other countries moaning how they are always the bad guys I loved how in command Lucas was in this episode and how well RA uses his posture. When he is being the leader he is tall, spine straight shoulders back but in his more vulnerable moments he is slightly more slumped around the shoulders. I liked the meeting with Maya it was well done loved the anguishe in RAs tone when he was speaking, however I understand why people are getting weary of Lucas' love worries and like any show the continuity goes out. Elizaveta was the love of his love in series 7 and he never even thinks of her. Liked the flirting with Beth Beth I'm not sure of, there is a certain ambiguity about her. I think people are being awfully harsh on her acting skills. Good as the others are this isn't Shakespeare people and I don't sense that she is any worse than the others. Also if she had been just like Ros that would not have been liked either Harry and Ruth really bore me, sorry can't help it. I really do think the writers are pandering to the fans and doing it badly. Harry sounded like a petulant whiney child in that phone call. Having said that well done Ruth for saying it was work she was calling about. I liked the Harry and Lucas scene at the end but neither of them can talk about lying. Dimetri didn't have a lot to do I expect more from him later . I do like Tariq he is so droll |

(02-10-2010 04:21 PM)grampus Wrote: Anyway, what's with the "Beth looks frumpy" vibe on here?! Surely you want your spooks to be boy/girl next door types that melt into the background. If they were all femme fatales dressed up to the nines then surely you'd get dozens of witnesses for everything they did, from taking the milk in to shooting a Russian! Not quite sure I would describe Beth as looking frumpy extremely cute I would have thought and dressed up as oil exec she looked rather chic in that simple black dress - very like some of the female lawyers I see every day on my way to work near Greys Inn. |

RE: Series 9 Episode 2 discussion
This was on last Saturday night and I found these comments of my mother's rather amusing. Thought I'd share.
Mum: Hmph. Well. I certainly hope this Lucas plot goes somewhere now that he is taking over the storyline. Me: It does. Mum: It seems kind of weird that the writers would let us know he is bad right from the start... ruins the suspense a bit doesn't it? There better be a massive plot twist with this or I will be very bored by episode eight. Me: Oh don't worry there is a massive plot twist. Mum: As long as it all comes together and makes sense I'm happy... Me: Er... um... weeeelll... you'll just have to see. Awkward. I hate it when people press me for spoilers. I'm a terrible liar Anyway, on a rewatch on Saturday I found this to be just an average episode- not bad but not great either. I honestly don't get all of the SM hate. It's not her fault she was given minimal backstory and character and I don't find her acting to be anything worse than Dmitri or Tariq and she's legions above SC I found the way this story was told a bit repetitive (with the different perspectives of the same thing) but I liked that we found out a bit about Beth. Honestly though, my favourite episodes from this series were all of the ones that furthered Ruth's character developement and seeings as she was hardly in this one, my attention wasn't as held as usual. From memory I really liked Ruth in 9.1 (I think this was one of the best of the series), 9,4, 9.6, 9.7 and 9.8. |

RE: Series 9 Episode 2 discussion
Interesting comments from your mum, I'm going to be really interested in what she thinks by the end. Although the different perspectives was quite interesting, IMO, I'm glad that Spooks doesn't use that technique as the norm.
Lucas 8.4: It's all about trust, isn't Harry ?. Signature by the brilliant TygerBright |

RE: Series 9 Episode 2 discussion
I liked the different perspectives technique. The way it was executed was a little confusing at first (I didn't realise that the first run-through was only from one person's perspective until different names started flashing up to signify who had experienced what), but it was a fresh and interesting method of story-telling. It was also interesting to see the team keeping secrets from one another, and how there are always several sides to each story. A good set-up for the events of the rest of the series, in retrospect.

RE: Series 9 Episode 2 discussion
Watched this episode last night and was pretty disappointed about HR. After season 8 I thought it would get better but it seems that season 9 will be a big cold shower when it comes to HR relationship. I love R character but its pity that she is so grey this season (depressed and cant let things go and be happy).
Where are those happy moments? |

There is a Harry/Ruth thread where we analyse and discuss everything about this pair. You should drop in there for a more extensive discussion on their development in season 9.

It's under Character & Actor discussion. Look for the thread called Harry and Ruth: Back with a vengeance?
