RE: Episode 1 Discussion
Did we ever say that you didn't? I thought that we were all just worried about your knowledge of torture... (BTW what was your conclusion? Was torture an effective technique?)
Aww, Harry has a very big heart. A very big smashed heart, but big none the less. (Just reread that sentence, it looks slightly weird... but never mind.) He is pretty good at time wasting. And the more he kills time, the more likely it is that he won't have to say where the uranium is before Lucas gets there. DANNY - Placements all over the shop. Back up vehicles, chopper support if we need it. Bomb disposal with a signal jammer for Mary’s trademark remote control blasts. And Tom here’s doing the catering. Mate. You are so covered. |

No, I think so too. And so do I!
Honestly: based on what evidence was available, it's often ineffective. But there's plenty of information out there that would obviously be classified. As well, it often depends on the country. Being more aggressive and using chainsaws or Alsatians doesn't guarantee anything, and it also depends on who you're interrogating. The basic rule of thumb is that you need a smoking gun, and you're more likely to break a mercenary than an extremist. Which ironically enough, is also what drama on TV tells us, although the methods are often different. |

RE: Episode 1 Discussion
So you're saying that we should believe what we see on tv?

RE: Episode 1 Discussion
If Harry and Ruth get together, yes! You should definitely believe that love might just have a chance.

RE: Episode 1 Discussion
But if we believe what we see on tv (using here the example of Harry and Ruth's relationship,) we'll believe that love will be slow, awkward, but above all sweet and that before we get the chance to really love another person they'll go die (or disappear...) But I know what you mean.

RE: Episode 1 Discussion
Have been mining this thread looking for new grist.
Quote:by JHyde: The scene with Malcolm telling Nico "A Dog So Small" reminded me a lot of the Fiona/Danny scene in 3.10 (?) and the Pooh birthday story, "look at all the presents, Fiona." Both scenes were tremendously poignant and the device was used very effectively both times. Quote:by Tea Lady: Yes, that's definitely part of the training -- they're told to stall if captured and give the team time to find them. Adam says as much to Jo at the end of 6.10 when they're being held. He also says the same in the ep with the mercenary guy (don't remember which series, but a long time ago). "What is the truth?" "Betrayal is a cancer. Let it eat your soul, not mine." "Please tell me this isn't going where I think it's going." |

RE: Episode 1 Discussion
What's interesting about lwhite53's observation about the comparison between Danny's death and Malcolm's story is that not only was the same writer involved, but the same director. Ben Richards (writer, the still point of the turning world as far as Spooks is concerned, the cheese to their pizza) and Alrick Riley who directed it.

RE: Episode 1 Discussion
I didn't know that and it does make it interesting -- using the idea of going somewhere else in your mind (your particular quiet place?) when death seems inevitable. In both scenes, the story is a gift the teller gives the listener. Danny sends Fiona away from his certain death and Malcolm takes Nico away from what he believes will be Nico's death. An amazingly selfless act, given the circumstances.
"What is the truth?" "Betrayal is a cancer. Let it eat your soul, not mine." "Please tell me this isn't going where I think it's going." |

OK. I'm finally getting around to watching Episode 1. Really good so far.
Always love your country, but never trust your government. |
