Those who like murder mysteries /crime novels should give Peter Temple's books a go. I highly recommend his The Broken Shore. It is set in Australia, so some of the colloquialisms can be hard to understand, but the writing is excellent.

Yeah, I'll go with that - Peter Temple's awesome.

I'm also re-reading Mailer's The Armies Of The Night which I've forgotten how much I love. It's also made me want Powell all over again.

For those who like mysteries, try the Stieg Larsson books: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played With Fire, The Girl . . . the Hornet's Nest (can't think of the last title offhand). Also Tana French: In the Woods, The Likeness.

Loved the Harry Potter books, hate the movies -- it really is time someone taught those kids to act!

I've read "Men who hate women", well I've just found out that was actually translated as "The girl with the Dragon Tattoo", I liked it, but I felt like it something is missing to make it great.

I must start reading the Hobbit right now!! I want to finish it before the movie is filmed, but I think I have plenty of time. I'm also excited Guillermo's making it. Ian McEllen is in it, isn't he? He's a wonderful actor, loved him as Gandalf Smile

Oh! I almost forgot! I enjoyed reading: "Brave new word", "Farenheit 451" and "1984", I named them together as they talk about a near future when there's an oppressive society. It's worth reading, they're brilliant!

The last one is The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest.

I've read the first one, and enjoyed it. Must still get around to the other two.

As with Tranquility and Thames I I'm a big Poirot fan but my favourite are the Patrick O'Brian Aubrey/Maturin novels about Napoleonic naval warfare. As there are twenty of them that run back to back its a monster read that usually takes me about six months to get through.

Yes, Beatriz, I agree. These books are some of my 'all time' favourites. Forgot to mention them earlier. I think some of the other Spooks fans here might enjoy them as well. I will follow up on the Stieg Larsson books.

I loved those Patrick O'Brien books when I was at school. They still smell of summer afternoons and granny smith apples and freahly mown grass to me.

Yeah, I know exactly what you mean about how rereading something from your youth and even sometimes just holding it, tricks the senses. It's almost like traveling in time.
