That is a good question. She would have gone back to Cyprus surely? I guess it all would depend on whether Harry would then have sorted out her "status in this country" and then let Ruth know in Cyprus. Ruth would then have had a choice to stay with George or come back to the UK. I have a feeling that if Harry had sorted out her status she would have come back to the UK eventually. She would not have been able to resist coming back knowing she could, and knowing she could have Harry. Thats what I think anyway. (No Harry's Diary waiting for me !! Have my face scrunched up now in a Harry kicking laptop like way !!)

RE: [spoilers] Ruth
I like the way you describe Ruth, Silktie, and agree.

Difficult question... I think her loyalty would make her stay with George... And as he had his job there.. Perhaps they'd return to Cyprus, and there'd be Nico too...
But I think that would be a very difficult decision to make... knowing she could return to the UK and be with Harry. It was better for her that George died (If you think it in a cold way...)

Enjoy you're reading, Tea Lady

RE: [spoilers] Ruth
I think she would stay with George, out of insecurity more than anything else, but I think it would be a horrible decision to make, and one that she would constantly think about and maybe regret later. So maybe George being shot was a blessing disguise (well it was for HR fans anyway Tongue)

RE: [spoilers] Ruth
I'm not sure she'd have stayed with George -- remember, he was none too keen when he found out she hadn't told him the whole story of why she was in Cyprus. She, like the rest of them, lied to keep her cover safe. And one of the last things he said to her was that he didn't want to learn her values (paraphrasing here). So even had he lived, I think her perfect, elegant life in Cyprus was probably gone.

Also interesting that she didn't tell him the truth -- was she afraid to?

RE: [spoilers] Ruth
Hmmm... so maybe she would have stayed with George if he hadn't been involved at all, but if he was involved, such as in 8.1, then she wouldn't have even had the option.

RE: [spoilers] Ruth
Thinking about it though, could Ruth have gone back to Cyprus with George and Nico? Her cover was blown. Would it have been safe for her? George didnt seem too happy to be in the UK and I couldnt see him wanting to have stayed living there. There is a chance Ruth would not have wanted to have put him and Nico in further danger by going back to Cyprus.

RE: [spoilers] Ruth
You have a point, lwhite53, I was thinking about Ruth and not George, he wasn't very happy about he was learning about her... But I also think that when he said that he was just angry because he had been forced to leave Cyprus all of a sudden and not knowing why.
I honestly don't know what would have happened.

As for Ruth not telling the truth... perhaps she was afraid of his reaction and maybe she wanted to start a completely new life and "forget" her old life...

Kind of goes back to the Tom and Ellie situation though, doesn't it. Is Ruth actually the person George thought she was? Or is she someone altogether different? How could he ever really know?

And I agree,Tea Lady -- Ruth's going back to Cyprus would certainly have put George and Nico in danger, as well as Ruth herself. In order to stay together, they would have had to go somewhere totally new and start all over. And the potential for the same thing to happen again would always be hanging over their heads. Is that something George would be willing to put his son through?

Ultimately, you can't run away from who you are, no matter how much you may want to. Harry said it to her in the Diana ep: "You're a born spook, Ruth."

I think one of the reasons that H/R is such a great relationship is the gradual realization by both that the other is someone worth looking into. They very slowly discover that they have similar tastes, similar intellects, similar senses of humor, similar ideas of loyalty and duty. Ruth gets there first, but that's because she's actively looking for someone. Once she narrows her focus to Harry, he's done for. I think it probably crystalized during series 3.

Oh I definitely agree that they slowly discover that they have similar tastes and values, I'm not sure that I would describe Harry as done for though!

RE: [spoilers] Ruth
If Ruth had gone back to Cyprus, I think there would have been sufficient questions and doubts that the relationship was doomed anyway.
