The books were written for teenagers, and are at their level, but for an overstretched mother with far too many other things to think about they've been a really enjoyable quick read and far better than some badly written chick lit. As for hype - I hadn't realised there was any, not here in the UK anyway. I loved the film which is why I started reading the books. But all to their own
