Wow! some great points there Silktie.
If Ros and/or the HS doesn't make it, then surely the writers can not ignore the effect this would have on Harry? You can't just have him carrying on like a robot. As you say, the dam will have to burst. I also feel that Harry felt the loss of the old HS in S8. I know he didn't die but I think Harry did consider him a friend and a friend that he let down, because Nightingale got to him. Someone else Harry got close to especially as Harry probably had to confide in him about Ruth.
