I agree that they do not fully realise what is between them. Perhaps they know how they themselves feel but not the other and the events of 4.05 have perhaps shocked them a little and given them some hope as to the other. In 4.06 Ruth's needyness is perhaps her trying out this new dynamic between the two of them
