The Diary definitely would make an interesting addition into the whole inquiry-plotline, and who knows, maybe some relationships will be expanded upon more with the diary in the mix. There are dates in the diary that are not there, so maybe the show can actually update it in some way. That would be cool. I think Harry has mellowed as he got older, as do most people when one grows up, he's not head-strong and reckless as he used to be, not always the one to jump and shoot first anymore, he's gotten wiser. But then again, I guess that's sort of a double-edge sword too. I'm not sure what's worse, getting older or getting wiser, or if any of those two has done Harry any good in the end. He still lost almost everything close to him, it hasn't really saved his career and lost him his prodigy. Maybe his life was easier then when he was young and more carefree.
