To be honest the City of Sydney makes a hell of a lot of that back in various ways. Plus it's a HUGE tourist draw, this is peak tourism season out here. Plus the hospitality industry does a big night and it's worth it for local businesses.

NYE and the following day are traditionally the really hot days too, they were probably the hottest days we've had so far but it has actually been a pretty mild summer so far. So they got lucky.
