Just because they all know about the "non" Harry and Ruth relationship, doesn't necessarily mean they would handle it a lot better. Some people will always gossip. It's how they make themselves "popular" until the tables turn on them.

Also, who would like working closely with the person who is "seeing" the Boss, or may be "seeing" the boss, but you can't quite be sure. You wouldn't talk about the same things with that person would you? You would treat Ruth differently, not necessarily in a horrible way, if she was "seeing" Harry. That thought for Ruth, who has not always fitted in with her bookish ways, is probably still as abhorrent as it was back in S5.
