I can see Harry worrying that Ruth would think the cats died because he didn't look after them properly, and not wanting to give her something else to hate him for, buying others that look more or less the same, and trying to fob them off as the original ones. Ruth, of course, wouldn't be fooled for a second, leaving poor Harry even deeper in trouble.
