I think their point was it could have been any of the former soviet satellite "XXXXstan" countries that had recently petitioned for entry to the EU, since they all apparently have abundant natural resources and no money to mine them.

That's actually nice to know. There is so much poverty and once the investment deals get made, money will flow in and energy and whatever will flow out. Here's hoping it all goes down fairly and environmentally sound.

I wouldn't bet on that. Energy companies aren't known for being fair or environmentally friendly in the pursuit of new product and/or markets, alas.
