This doesn't help us right now, but the BBC has been talking about implementing an fee-based International iPlayer for a while but I have no idea where that stands. Does anyone?

According to this article the iPlayer should now be available for iPad users in some European countries and later also in the US but it seems there is still no movement on a general application for "regular" computer users. I'd love having the possibility to access the iPlayer officially and would willingly pay whatever fee they'd ask me for (well ok, there'd be a limit of course ;-) ) At the moment I'm also managing to see it via proxys but sometimes you need nerves of steel until you find some that work...

Quick question- if I get the DVD for S10 from the UK, will I be able to play it on my computer (and a regular DVD player in the U.S.)? Just curious b/c I heard that British DVDs have a different format. Thank you! Smile

No, you cannot play it on your computer, at least I cannot on my two computers. The computer will ask you if you want to play the DVD according to region 1 or 2. Unfortunately, you can go back and forth between regions only 5 times on your computer (I hope that I am clear, I am not computer-savy). My son adviced me not to do it. Perhaps somebody else on this forum could help us regarding our computers.

The best bet is to make your DVD player multi-region. I got great advice from Nixie on this forum.

"Just go to this website http://www.videohelp.com/dvdhacks/ and type in the make and model of your DVD player and it will give you instructions on how to make it multi-region. All legal and above board."

You will find this information on the threat Series 9 DVD Release, page 16.

My son followed the instructions on the website and I can now watch DVDs from Amazon.co.uk.

Another advice from another forum member:
" You can get a DVD remote control which can unlock your dvd player and make it a multi-regional player. I purchased mine on ebay. All you have to do is type in DVD Unlocker. You have to specify what your dvd player is. eg. Panasonic, Sanyo etc."

FYI HarryPearceSpy, I got the Season 9 DVD's from the amazon.co.uk web site and had no problem at all playing it on a 4-year-old dell laptop or a two-year-old Macbook Pro, purchased in the US and Canada, respectively. So you might not even need to do anything. Cheers!

Ah, yeah, why does it not work on my Dell laptop bought a year ago at BestBuy in the DC area? It does not work either on my HP PC.
Both times the message is, I am copying it word by word: "Unable to play this DVD because it does not match the region code of your disc player. You must insert a disc created for your region or change the region code of your disc player"

It is certainly a mystery. My son, who is an engineer, gave me the advice not to change the region codes on the computers. He did it on the DVD player without any problem.

I suppose that one could change the region and watch only British DVDs. I just find it strange that we both have Dell laptops. Perhaps, somehow, your Dell laptop has a multi-region player. When I recently bought my HP PC, I asked for a multi-region disc player. As you see, I had no luck.

Anyway, it is about time that the computer industry and the DVD media get rid of this ridiculous region system. I will say no more, until next time!
