RE: [Spooks]: The Best Moments
Harry and Ruth deserve a list of their own, IMO .
Anyway, some of my favourites are: Harry telling Tessa he will have to throw her to the wolves, at the end of series 1. Zoe and Danny nearly kissing on series 2. Harry returning wounded to the Grid on 3.01 and throwing Mace out. Loved the way Ruth managed to get him the message. The scene at Ruth's house with Ruth, Harry and Hicks on 4.05. I actually love the entire episode. Harry trying to save the old Commy spy at the end of 4.08 and failing. The bus scene, of course, on 4.09. Harry arrested by the traitors on 5.02. When told he will not be going to work ever again, he asks for a bottle of scotch. 5.05 - the scene with Mace. Ros telling Ruth she never apologized. Love the entire episode, really, not just the H&R scenes. The episode when Ros had to "die", on series 6 - Harry telling her that she is "his" birlliant officer and not to be afraid. Connie's interrogation on 7.08. 8.08 - Harry crying on the roof after Sara Cauldfield is shot dead, and Ruth telling him that all men are brothers. 9.06 or 9.07 - Ruth's episodes with Deery. 10.6 - other than H&R moments, the scenes between Elena and Ruth. and of course, the scenes after Ruth's death. I hate them, but also find them great. |

RE: [Spooks]: The Best Moments
In 5.2 I don't think it's just that Harry won't be going to work again. He wants the scotch because he knows he is about to die.

RE: [Spooks]: The Best Moments
Before I made my list, I thought about the characteristics these moments should have for me. I decided that it should be moments that made me sit up and go, "Ooh, I say! That's awesome" or "I didn't expect that!" So, while there are many other moving/emotional/character moments that I love, these are my ten best moments according to the criteria I set:
1.2: Helen and the deep fat fryer. It may be clichéd and old news now, but when it actually happened it made us all sit up and say: Did they just do that?! 2.10: Tom shoots Harry and swims out into the North Sea – beautifully filmed, emotional sequence. 5.5: Harry glasses Oliver Mace in a Gentleman’s Club after having a conversation about the rights and wrongs of torture - Harry draws his line in the sand and sacrifices himself to save Ruth. 9.1: Harry poisons the former Home Secretary for his involvement in Nightingale and Ros’ death. Fantastic performance from both actors and stunningly set and filmed. 7.7: Harry sits in a chair waiting for CO19 to come and get him, listening to the Slave Chorus from Nabucco, and then the soldiers burst in. Perfection ito performance, mood, music, action and filming in this scene. 3.3: Adam traipses all over London to shake off the surveillance on him before meeting Harry’s secret asset. Fantastic exhibition of tradecraft at work. 3.10: Danny provokes the terrorist into shooting him in order to save Fiona. Moving, upsetting end for a great character. 4.10: Zaf gives his presentation on how the Security Services could have killed Diana, and it’s so convincing we all wonder whether it might be true. 6.9: Harry presents himself as a target to Davey King and gets shot, and for just a moment we’re not aware that he’s wearing the bulletproof vest. 7.7: Connie slashes Ben’s throat – unexpected and shocking, made all the worse for her calm reaction afterwards. Honourable mentions go to Adam talking Carmen Joyce into killing herself in 3.1, and Shining Dawn's first bomb going off while the team is sitting in church at Danny's funeral. |

I have such a bad memory, but off the top of my head:

Under the sway of thy gentle wings" |

RE: [Spooks]: The Best Moments
It's really interesting to see which quiet moments make people's lists. I am pleased to see Harry and Wes in 7.1 making a few lists and also some of Jo's stuff. Surprised the HR bus scene didn't make more.

8.1 Mani counting to ten and Ruth calling Harry a bas***d
7.8 Harry with coat and jacket off, standing facing the window of the FSB headquarters in London. 7.8 Harry in boot of a car in body bag. 8.1 Ruth rushing up the stairs of her Cypriot house when she hears the car doors open. |

RE: [Spooks]: The Best Moments
Just to name a few...
* All of Series 7, particularly the last two episodes. In my opinion this series was the best of the lot. So many great points ... too many to list. I can easily watch Ep 7 and 8 over and over again. While I have all these eps saved on a hard drive, I also purchased the DVD for this series. In Australia, we get a 50-52 min edit of the full broadcast, we missed out on so much good stuff - most notably, Harry's subway murder. * Series 2 Episode 2. The first episode I ever watched. Tom and an Algerian conscript confront a teenage suicide bomber in a playground. My cynical self expects it all to finish in a happy ending, as TV shows often do. But he pulled the string ... The excellent filming, Jennie Muskett's accompanying music and the great story hooked me straight away. * Series 9, Episode 7. The two different versions of what actually happened when John Bateman blew up the embassy. "The killer is awake!" * Series 10 Episode 6. Even though we have just seen the last episode here in Australia, the scenes following Ruth's murder are top notch stuff, especially the memorial. |
