RE: Clothes and Style
I like Beth's outfits in this series because they looked so normal and not just black which seemed to predominate series 8. The way Ruth wore a lot of black was great in reflecting her inner feelings.

My first post! Only recently started watching the show but my partner and I have devoured Seasons 1-7 and have already ordered 8.

Anyway, this thread is very timely for me as I've been wanting to smarten up a bit (I'm male and 36) and I love the stuff that Tom/Adam/Zaf wear, especially the single-breasted, mid-length black coats.

The trouble is, I'm a bit of a naff shopper, and am having extreme difficulty finding what I want - and I live in London! I've tried all the usual high street shops but this year it seems to be all short, double breasted/military jackets which are nice and everything, but not what I'm after.

I have actually found what I'm looking for in my local H&M (although it's not on their website). It seems to be just what I'm looking for: fitted, not too long (just above knee) and single-breasted. At £60 the price is good too, but I'm not convinced by the quality or how long it will last. The ones in the shop already look like they've been worn a few times, with loose threads etc....

Can anyone give me some ideas on where to get what I'm after? I guess I would spend up to £200.

Regards,

John

My man, welcome. Feel free to check any of my previous posts in this thread, as I tend to dress like Lucas/Tom/Adam/Harry (Smart casual) and have a coat like the one you have (it's a Dehavilland, and it's amazing!)

I shop around: Debenhams, Slaters, Suityou.co.uk etc, they all have nice shirts, trousers, jeans, and of course, jackets. Some are just too expensive, but I always manage to get the stuff I want relatively cheaply (£50 to £200) from the above sites and more.

Hope this helps!

RE: Clothes and Style
Well, I had another look at the coats in H&M and to be frank, they are rubbish. Really badly made, look tatty even in the shop. I reckon they'd only last a season, if that.

I found a really nice one in John Lewis (own brand), it's really nice. Fitted, warm, not too long, and it's not heavy! :-)

Now, a question. I've noticed that the pockets on a lot of coats are sewn shut. Why is this? Are you supposed to snip them open so they are usable as pockets, or leave them be?

RE: Clothes and Style
I think the pockets are sewn shut to keep them looking good during transport and in the shop, and so them don't catch and rip. In the old days it was considered bad manners to put one's hands into pockets( I believe), so if you want to be very so polite leave them sewn shut then you can't put your hands in them Wink
However it is soooooo cold I would cut them open just to keep my hands warm!!

Never, never buy a cheap winter coat JHClare, not unless you really have to. My MaxMara coat is on it's 6th Winter, it's super warm, stylish and I still get complemented on it every year. Oh and I still have the pockets sewn up on it! Get some nice gloves Smile I would go for the John Lewis one, although I do buy loads of stuff from H&M, but not coats.

RE: Clothes and Style
Third time overcoat shopping is a charm:

http://www.bensherman.com/tailoring/over...oat-1.html

Debenham's is selling it for £112.50. I got mine on Tuesday and wore it on a night out with my suit from the same make (Kings Fit) and it looked great, very Harry-esque! It also goes well if you're going smart casual (jeans/shirt), like Tom/Lucas. All round winner, it fits perfectly! Very, very happy, and as I said, third time's a charm!

RE: Clothes and Style
OK, I've never been entirely convinced that Lucas's Belstaff in Season 8 is a Delta Force. Just didn't look quite right. The fabric looked slightly different and there was no buckle on the collar but a metal loop with a velcro strap to pull through. After a lot of digging, I am certain it's actually a Belstaff Braddan Bridge blouson, with the Belstaff emblem removed from the left sleeve.
