RE: Connie
I'm glad that they gave her a meaty role. GJ had the ability to pull it off and S6/7 were the better for it.

Zaf: "Shouldn't you be in prison or something?"
Ros: "This is the something."

This is something else which doesn't make sense - at least, not to me. The person who suggested to Harry that Connie was the mole was Qualtrough (or whatever his name is) - Connie's handler. I can understand - to an extent - why he might have done this (in order to have Harry clear Connie of suspicion), but the clearance depended on Harry finding that ornament and smashing it. Might it not have been better to have suggested someone else as being the mole? As was pointed out when Harry was on the receiving end, it's very difficult to persuade someone that you are not a mole, especially when evidence might have been manufactured in order to prove that you are a mole.

This didn't bother me. I'm sure there was a back-up plan to ensure that Harry found something that proved her innocence. I tend to think they played on Harry's friendship with Connie - they knew he would not really want to believe it was her, and anything they fed him to absolve her would have done the trick. If he hadn't found the tape, she would have made sure he 'found' something else.

And the reason for Qualtrough suggesting Connie as the mole also makes sense - they knew that it was probable that any evidence Harry found would point to Connie, as she is after all the guilty party. So why not pre-empt that and get her cleared early on?

RE: Connie
And just as importantly by getting her cleared early she was then privy to the inner workings of Harry's investigation. Which worked both dramatically and practically.
