RE: Other hobbies?
Rosetta stone didn't work for me lol - quite possibly because my laptop is rubbish. When you have to speak it doesn't pick up your voices very well and instead of correctng my accent each time I just ended up yelling louder and louder haha I think I worried my parents when they walked past my room and I was sat there yelling 'garcon' at my laptop lol
Definitely not worth the money I like the BBC language books and CDs, though they are quite basic... The russian one has very catchy music I still find myself humming sometimes lmao |

RE: Other hobbies?
I suppose Arabic is not exactly the easiest language to learn, hats off to you JHyde for teaching yourself
I've just been asked to help one of my nephews with Russian, he's 12 now and takes English and Russian in school... (understand the former, not really the latter, seems they start them spooks early these days ) I had to decline because I remember next to nothing from the altogether 12 years of learning and speaking the language. Would brush it up for a chat with Lucas tho. LOL |

RE: Other hobbies?
I don't think I have the patience and dedication to learn a new language properly... I'll stick to programming languages.

I also love playing darts and bowling. I don't usually do these things but I enjoy a lot when I do

RE: Other hobbies?
Russian is a language I have never desired to learn. Maybe because I'm not crazy about Russian literature (with the odd exception) and the driving force behind my learning languages has been a desire to read texts in their original languages.
It's also meant to be back breakingly difficult. Many thanks to Tyger for a terrific signature |

RE: Other hobbies?
I attempted to learn russian a few months ago but my hour a day for practise soon slipped away haha.. I started though because of reading Dostoevsky because I know from reading french books some things can't be translated to have exactly the same effect. I do love Russian lit though Although admittedly I have yet to get past page 20 of war and peace LOL

RE: Other hobbies?
Dostoevsky is my exception to the Russian rule along with Chekhov.
What's funny is that Harry prefers Crime and Punishment to War and Peace too (6.9). I'll take the Esky over Tolstoy any day. Many thanks to Tyger for a terrific signature |

RE: Other hobbies?
's not as if I had a choice
I'm East German and back when I was in school Russian was mandatory from 5th grade. After all, the Soviets were our Big Brother(s) Same went fo Russian literature (fortunately we never had to read the originals.. I guess I'd still be on page 37 of "War and Peace") but since I love reading I didn't really mind.. and I quite like Tolstoy. We did learn quite a bit about Russian culture and customs too (obviously the expurgated version ).. including drinking habits ... that proved uselful later in life, unlike the language |
