”I try to be quite a detailed actor. People were really picking up on that. Even if it was just a flicker of the eye or something, they got it.” - Richard Armitage (!!!)

Sorry, this really excited me because it means all this detailed analysis actually holds some ground! RA does intentionally do the tiniest things to make his character more believable! Yahoo

RA mentioned in several interviews that Lucas wasn't who he thought he was, therefore I assume the way we saw Lucas in series 7 and 8, was exactly the way RA was portraying him.

And apparently they have perfume production books too! Silba

Lucas did refer (jokingly) to having an 'eight year reading sabbatical' in 8.7, so presumably he read about perfume and Hindi religious beliefs!

Shame you didn't write series 9, bruwitch!

I wonder where the original writers of series 7 and 8 saw the character of Lucas going?

That had crossed my mind too, and I did wonder what the shows creator David Wolstencroft might have thought.

I'm about 100% certain they didn't plan on him being the complete opposite to the character they had created.

They certainly didn't plan for Lucas to suffer schizophrenia or split personality or some other strange weird dodgy drastic personality splits, bomb an embassy for fun, be a general love-sick "Maya Maya" idiot! Dodgy

As much as I love this character, somehow I knew the character was gonna fall down the toilet the moment those puppy-dog eyes laid eyes on Maya..... GAR!!!!

It should be fun to see the Series 9 writers attempt to explain this story when the "Downfall of Lucas North" feature is released. I sure like to know what was going through their muddled little brains!

RE: [spoilers] Lucas. Just Lucas.
To be honest, when I re-watch, I notice Lucas' character was a bit messed up in S8 as well. Obviously S9 took it a step too far, but I hated the way he was so in love with Sarah in S8. Obviously, there were still some great scripts for him, but overall... I hated the way he was used as eye-candy. Yes, RA is good looking. Does that mean I constantly want to see him half-naked/having sex with creepy CIA agents? No, it does not.

I think the treatment of his character just progressively got worse and worse through the 3 series. S7 Lucas was infinitely more believable and interesting than the Lucas we ended up with in S9, who was frankly, a complete waste of time in terms of character investment/believability.

I can forgive Series 8 because at least then, Lucas's love-sickness with Sarah had a lot of psychological roots underneath it all, the writers were still using a lot of his past and damaged psyche as a basis for his actions, and in that way, it was more believable. And like I said before, his love for Sarah wasn't really her as a person, but what she represented to him, a type of comfort and closeness that he desperately lacks. So from that story-standpoint, it made sense, and it created a more complex character in Lucas.

Whereas Series 9 tossed all that deep, complex, and interesting psychological issues away and created some new bizarre character with Lucas/John that simply did not mesh well together. He turned from a complex character to some one dimensional crazy psycho. It was just stupid.

At least Series 8 didn't have me climbing up walls, at least the Sarah/Lucas relationship had more of a meaningful purpose than John/Maya which had about the spark of a pathetic trash bin fire....Dodgy
