[spoilers] Harry and Ruth Strike Back

RE: [spoilers] Harry and Ruth Strike Back
So she only knew part of the story when she first went there? Suppose that makes sense, and would overcome the trust barrier if she didn't know it all at the time.

(No pain inflicted by the way; no need to apologise!)

RE: [spoilers] Harry and Ruth Strike Back
Good point Tea Lady! Of course we can't be sure if everything happened all at once. It's not unlikely that Harry didn't tell Ruth the location until much later, and that she was just there as an interpreter at the time. I agree that it would be odd to discover uranium 2 years after the invasion. What would all the fuss be about at that point, we could ask ourselves.

However, and I've said this before in discussions on other forums as well, the Spooks writers don't seem too fussy about continuity and making all the tiny details fit together, so it might as well be a bit of a mess that doesn't tie in with the time of the invasion in Iraq and Ruth's secondment to Section D.

Harry: "Dear God, Ruth. Is any institution in this country safe from you?"
Ruth: "I like to think not.".

RE: [spoilers] Harry and Ruth Strike Back
Tea Lady makes a good argument, but I tend to agree with JHyde on this one. I just can't see Harry taking anyone he doesn't know well on such a sensitive operation. The thing is, Ruth is not a field agent, and if it had happened whilst she was still at GCHQ, he would have no idea that she could also handle herself in the field. If he'd just needed an interpreter, there would have been people with field experience he could have taken.

Another thing which suggests to me that it could have taken place somewhere in season 4, is that it is evident from the things Mani said that he picked up on the fact that there could have been more than friendship between them. That indicates to me that there must already have been a close bond between them, which would not be the case if it happened while Ruth was still at GCHQ. And Mani specifically said that whilst everyone else were "at it like rabbits", Harry and Ruth seemed to have a very different connection. I don't think this kind of connection was evident between them before season 4.

Also, the way Ruth relates what happened to Ros and Lucas when she comes back to London, did not suggest in any way that it was something that happened whilst she was still at GCHQ.

Wrt to the uranium, Iraq is a big place, and the US could have claimed it had always been there, only in a place nobody looked in before.

You're not being a pain Tea Lady, we opened it up knowing that people would feel differently.

To be honest Bea and almh still haven't told me when they think it happened either, so Silktie and I could be in the minority on this one.

I've been thinking about this, Tea Lady has a point, but I tend to agree with JHyde and Silktie on this one. I can't imagine Harry picking a person from GCHQ without trusting her to come with him on that kind of mission...

I do see Tea Lady's point of view, my only problem with that is the trust aspect.

Yes, but he didn't trust her that much did he, as he moved the uranium and didn't tell her. Wink

I could be totally wrong on this (I've only watched 8.01 twice and the last time was long time ago), didn't he moved it while she was in Cyprus? It could be just me making things up Tongue

Yes he moved it while she was in Cyprus I think (hence why she didn't know it had been moved).

RE: [spoilers] Harry and Ruth Strike Back
There could be all sorts of reasons why he moved the uranium. Especially after Ruth left. Who's to say that Harry didn't guess they were on his tail at an earlier point in time and move it then? It would partly explain why Ruth was brought into the whole thing.

My point is, he might have moved it after she left and she wasn't there to tell anymore.

RE: [spoilers] Harry and Ruth Strike Back
Ok ok, I know I am on the ropes and I can hear a distant bell ringing but I don't think Harry EVER told Ruth the true location of the uranium.

Harry and Ruth were both picked up by Mani because it was not in Norfolk when they went to look for it. How did Mani know to look in Norfolk in the first place? Well because Harry must have disclosed to the CIA* and Six, when the operation fell apart and was officially closed down, that was where he was going to store it.

Harry must have made a big show of saying to everyone, this is where I am going to store it, and this included Ruth. Now, when has Harry ever ever trusted Six or the CIA? Never. So my money is on, Harry making a big show of putting it somewhere, but actually it went somewhere else.

Having Ruth on board helped make the cover story seem plausible. If Harry really really needed a second person to know the real location of the uranium, in case anything happened to him, why didn't he tell someone else when Ruth left? He didn't. So he was quite content for him to be the only one who ever knew the correct location.
