RE: [spoilers] Harry and Ruth: Back With A Vengeance?
The Harry and Ruth moments in this episode 5 were amongst the very best we have ever seen IMO. The Spooks writers are very clever how they build the romance (what a lot of us would own up to being our favourite element of the show) into a drama which is anything but.
The car scene was one of the most intimate scenes they have ever shared. My favourite line was Ruth's: 'guilt is something I understand....and jealousy too'. She was admitting that she shopped Harry to Towers out of spite there I think. Harry wasn't the only guilty party in the mess surrounding Coaver's death, because somewhere along the line there must have been an intercepted call to the CIA - otherwise how would Gavrik's men have known where they were. If Ruth hadn't shopped Harry then maybe he wouldn't have got kidnapped (by the baddies, I mean). I also enjoyed the telephone conversation after Ruth gets out of the US embassy. I can understand how she felt manipulated, it passed through my mind that Harry was softening her up so that he could get her to steal the laptop for him. But he talked me around as well, he was very clever to bring up the proposal as evidence of his lack of timing. I just wish he could pull Ruth into a hug instead of Elena, she's had two in two weeks, lucky thing! And I have to mention the Harry and Ruth moment that was implied in the Harry/Ilya scene. I have never seen Harry look so heart broken as when Ilya was asking what Harry had to show for all his years in secret service. All those missed years with Ruth. **sniff** |

RE: [spoilers] Harry and Ruth: Back With A Vengeance?
I thought that Ruth was talking about her guilt for what happened to George and Nico, because Harry was talking abouth his guilt towards Elena and Sasha. It seemed to me that both were discussing their private feelings about their loved ones.
It was Ruth's duty to tell the HS about Harry's crazy idea of kidnapping a senior CIA official. How do we know that the bad CIA guys were Gavrik's men? Is it because the leader was a bodyguard to Ilya? Don't forget that Sasha had bugged Harry's car at the beginning of the episode. Not only Elena, but also Sasha do not have the best interests of Harry at heart. I think that the British, the Russians and the Americans are all monitoring each other. I thought that the beach scene was even more heartbreaking than the car scene. Poor Ruth, I hated to hear her cry with so much anguish. She wanted so much to share a future with Harry on the Suffolk coast. |

I thought about the bug as well but they weren't using Harry's car. And Ruth could have trusted Harry. How many times has Harry acted the maverick, only to be proved right again and again. She was the one who used the word 'love' in the telephone call to Harry to ask what he was doing. When they met up in the car later on, Harry addressed Ruth's claim that he still loved Elena. And she did admit to jealousy, almost as if she was trying to explain why she said what she said to Towers. |

RE: [spoilers] Harry and Ruth: Back With A Vengeance?
and how many times did Harry not listen to Ruth? The latest being her phone call to Harry about Jim Coaver's kidnapping. They are two peas in a pod. I wish things would be simpler for them. Ruth was right. Her life in Cyprus was simple and elegant instead of that big mess. No fault of Harry or hers! I wish that they finally get together. They are ready for each other and there is always a stumbling block in their way. It's so frustrating.
I rewatched episode 5 and Harry was driving the car. It must be his car, since Sasha could hear what Ruth and Harry were saying about Elena and their own feelings. I am very afraid for them. Sasha is a loose canon now he has the proof that Harry is his father. |

RE: [spoilers] Harry and Ruth: Back With A Vengeance?
For some strange reason (or not) I keep listening to the wonderful and beautiful Sara by Fleetwood Mac again and again on my iPod after watching episode 5. I so very much think this is a song for Harry and Ruth in this series.

Sasha is a loose canon now he has the proof that Harry is his father. I think Naivety meant they weren't using Harry's car when they kidnapped Coaver. The kidnap of Coaver and the location where they were taking him was never discussed in Harry's car, so the fake CIA could not have got the information through the bug that Sasha planted. The only people who knew was the team, and then Calum told Ruth, and Ruth told the HS, and the HS told the Americans. The leak occurred somewhere along that line. Ruth had every right to tell Towers, but I agree that her comment about knowing what jealousy is was an oblique admission that there was also a personal element behind her decision to tell Towers. Just as there was a personal element behind Harry not telling her that he isn't in love with Elena when she challenges him during that first phone call. Had he done so, she might not have gone to the HS. In a sense, what we saw in this episode, is the two of them coming to grips with each other's faults and mistakes, and realising it doesn't change how they feel about each other. But for this pesky deportation to America business, they'd probably have been on that second, long delayed date by now. |

RE: [spoilers] Harry and Ruth: Back With A Vengeance?
Both of you are right about the car and Ruth. I thought that Ruth was feeling guilty about the "child" Nico, when Harry mentioned feeling guilty about "the child", meaning Sasha. It is true that when Ruth mentioned the word jealousy, she explained one of the reasons why she decided to tell the HS.
Frankly, I do not know why I am still speculating after reading the TV guide comments of PF. It is so disheartening and so contrary to what you are so beautifully writing about them: In a sense, what we saw in this episode, is the two of them coming to grips with each other's faults and mistakes, and realising it doesn't change how they feel about each other. I just don't get it. I can only hope that PF was teasing us. After reading the Radio Times review, I am even ready to believe that Series 10 Spoiler: show |
