Yes, total recall is bit weird. What's Pleasure Principle about?

RE: Peter Firth
PP is about a man (PF) trying to juggle three women in his life, and getting into all kinds of trouble because of it. Basically, PF hopping in and out of bed in various states of undress. It's a light-hearted drama, with PF doing a very good job as the leading man. Only available on video at present (and the odd one pops up on Ebay every so often) but I'm going to try and convert my version to DVD when I have several hours to try and figure out how to do it.

RE: Peter Firth
I love PP. It's one of the few of Peter's films that I can watch over and over again. Very amusing if you can track it down. Be warned though. It may put you off parsnips
This year Santa got me "The Explorations of Captain James Cook In The Pacific 1768-1779." I think it's a sign of how my family just thinks I am completely mad, as no one asked me why on earth I wanted this book! It's a little hard going I have to say. Do you think Peter was having us on, just like with the skinny dipping comment? |

You have only yourself to blame!
I've just watched "An Awfully Big Adventure". I'd never come across it before and am so glad I found it just through searching for a PF film. Typical understated British film chock full of brilliant British actors. Just a joy to watch them all really. PF was excellent. Very sad film though, particularly the very last scene. |

I so totally agree with you DogSoSmall, about An Awfully Big Adventure - no one warned me it'd be a tragedy. I got rather annoyed with it and almost wished I hadn't wasted my time!

RE: Peter Firth
A wee suggestion: watch An Awfully Big Adventure again, but only concentrate on Peter - forget everything else. Much better that way, I found and some nice subtleties in Peter's performance that I missed on the first viewing.

RE: Peter Firth
I thought the whole film was great. I like a bit of tragedy (just not when it comes to Harry & Ruth, OK?). That said, I was already concentrating on PF's performance which was riveting. The way he walked, his gestures, his expressions when he was in the background. Not overly camp. Just a very, very nice (in the true sense) characterisation. I thought Hugh Grant was excellent as well - a very underrated actor.
At the risk of sounding horribly obsessed, I've also just received in the post today an audio book of Tess of the d'Urbevilles narrated by PF. Words can not express ................. |

RE: Peter Firth
I loved Peter in AABA but hated the film. I can usually watch most things but found the whole incest thing a step too far!
I think most of us have already listened to Peter on the radio show Front Row from November, but if you missed it, it is available as a free podcast on itunes. Just type in Peter Firth. I have been trying to get through "Regeneration" on my ipod for about 6 months. I haven't got very far. I plan to have Peter keep me company though, on my walks to and from the train station from next Thursday. Has anyone managed to get hold of Peter reading "The Prince" yet? Just wondered what it was like. |

RE: Peter Firth
Thanks for the tip about Front Row, TL - wasn't aware of it.
Is "The Prince" that you referred to the Machievelli book? If so, I'd love to hear PF reading that one - it's an inspirational book. I've just started listening to Tess of the D'Urbevilles on my iPod as I walk to the station. I really don't like Thomas Hardy (having suffered the Mayor of Casterbridge at school) but Peter is really good at making it interesting through different voices and accents. I'd like to listen to "Birdsong" but haven't managed to find it yet. Anyone come across it? Happy new year, everyone! "Where's Harry?" "Moving in mysterious ways." |

Yes, it's by Niccolo Machiavelli. I can't find it anywhere. There are some sites where they advertise it for download but I can never get these to work and they always seem to spam up my computer so I try and avoid. I have "Birdsong" on audio tape (12 tapes) but haven't got round to listening to it. I need to really get it onto my iphone but have no idea how to do this or if I can. I don't think you can put "foreign" things on your ipod/iphone???? Happy New Year to you all. x TL |
