Ok, hope I can get this right and it won't be too long...

Series South Riding Spoiler: show

He's not really playing a bad guy but his character is manipulating someone else (Huggins, a preacher) into investing money into a house building scheme which then fails.
He lends some money to Huggins who got a girl pregnant and tells him of his plans to use some land to build houses and Huggins doesn't keep this to himself but gets some other people involved who also secretly invest money into that scheme.

At the end of the book it is clear that he only lent the money, so he could see that Huggins would do exactly what he expected him to do as some kind of experiment.

I think he's not really bad but he lacks something in social interaction. The other people respect him for his achievements (he's quite rich) and he's also clearly doing quite some things for the community but nobody can't really connect to him.

His characterization in the book is really good and I understood how he must seem to other people but I also understood his motives. There are so many good descriptions of people in this book and of human behaviour, I'm really glad I've read it...

Forgot to say in previous post that I have now watched "Tree of Hands" and I have started watching "Burndown."

OMG, they are seriously bad films. I don't like Peter's character in "Tree of Hands" at all and the pony-tail doesn't help. As for "Burndown"....my goodness! How did it get made? It's pure "cheese." Its only redeeming feature so far is that Peter is Sheriff of the town "Thorpeville." That's a good name for a town

I was watching the extras for S3 last night for the first time. In them PF mentions that he had actively avoided serialized popular TV because it tends to typecast an actor into one kind of role. He said he preferred instead what I think he called "challenging" pieces to quote, "which usually means no one has seen them." This would explain why he and his roles are usually very interesting but the overall pieces...ummm...aren't so much.

Opening an off-topic bracket:
To enable your PMs you must go to UserCP, on the menu on the left you click "Edit Options" under "Your profile" menu. Once there under the Messaging and Notifications you must enable "Receive private messages from other users". And there you go! Hope that helps.

For anyone looking forward to South Riding, have just found out that the DVD release date has now been delayed until the 7th March.

So just guessing, I wonder if it will start on Sunday 20th February and run for 3 weeks.

Resisting the temptation to start reading the book at the moment!
