RE: New Doctor Who Discussion
I was just wondering cos I don't recall but do they usually rehash the same alien thingies as much as they have been like Daleks and Angel things?

RE: New Doctor Who Discussion
I know that Stephen Moffat (new head writer), created the angels, so that is why he wanted them back. However the show does re-use aliens like the Daleks and the Cybermen (who are coming up in later eps), but in new ways. It serves as a link to the history and lore of DW and introduces them to a new generation.

Harry RE: New Doctor Who Discussion
I watched yesterday's episode earlier today...really enjoyed it. I like the new Doctor more than I thought I would. Bringing the angels back is great - they really are quite creepy. Can't wait until next week's episode now!

"Where's Harry?"
"Moving in mysterious ways."

RE: New Doctor Who Discussion
I love the sexy new TARDIS.

Mark Gatiss' episode was really great. It never gets old - that decision the Doctor has to make sometimes and we've seen it before with varying degrees of craziness - the Daleks or humanity. The Daleks or the Earth. The Daleks or reality. Every time it packs a punch.

The most recent episode was slow to start and Alex Kingston's hair is soooo unflattering. (Pity, because I liked her in season 4 but not so crazy this time around. Maybe that will get better next episode.) Having said that, I loved Sacred Bob coming over the radio as the angels' mouthpiece - very scary, very like Moffat's library episodes when Dave was speaking after he'd died. The clerics jokes are funny too.

Iain Glen's on spooks? Missed that one!

The angels are definitely nowhere near as benign as they were in 'Blink'.

Also, I loved the beginning of this episode. Starting in the museum was a lovely throwback to the beginning of the episodes in the library, except this time it was the biggest museum in the whole of history. Imagine how tired one would be! I loved the Doctor jumping around from one display to another.

Matt Smith is doing great, I think. He reminds me a lot of Peter Davison's doctor actually. He's really good at being older than he looks and you trust him - you need to be able to trust the doctor.

Also, he has a wonderful speaking voice. Really impressive.

I'm looking forward to seeing how this storyline is resolved.

I actually like Matt Smith and I really didn't think I would, he is very believable. Love the idea of the church having any army, great writing !
I still don't like Amy Pond though, she doesn't seem very amazed at the thought of travelling to different times and planets. Husband likes her though, can't imagine why !!

RE: New Doctor Who Discussion
I know what you means. That was the real stamp Davies made on the show - making the companion someone we knew and understood. There's not a huge amount of that in the old seasons, but I think that relating to the Doctor's companion is really important for the show's viewers.

RE: New Doctor Who Discussion
Haha me too Tongue I think they are the scariest alien things I've seen Tongue I think it is cos they look more real like some of the monster things can look a bit laughable haha which reduces the scare factor Tongue

RE: New Doctor Who Discussion
I know! And they're not just sending you back in time now either!

I still reckon the Vashta Nerada were the most terrifying of the 'new' monsters we've met. Moffat does that stuff brilliantly - he and Davies actually share a similar philosophy about writing for the show, in that they go for the kids. Davies always said it was about creating something where the next day the kids at school would be imitating the bad guys. If they did that, then it was scary/a good show.

In Moffat's case it's that when he was little he genuinely found Who very scary. Not camp or silly - but scary as hell.

RE: New Doctor Who Discussion
I think that the last episode (with the space whale powering the ship) was too scary for children. I would not have let my son whose 10 watch it (he is not into Dr who at the moment anyway). The idea of the lift floor opening up and some sort of creature living under the floor would have been too scary, I'd have never got him into a lift again !
I also think that this episode is too scary for children, it must be hard to appeal to such a wide audience, but I think it is brilliant.
